You may have noticed a small task lingering at the edge of your week, waiting for you to give it space. It’s the kind of thing you fully intend to do, yet it drifts behind everything else because you’ve been giving your energy to whatever feels louder in the moment.
The longer it sits there, the bigger it starts to feel. It isn’t growing, but your relationship with it is shifting. A bit more pressure. A bit more resistance. A bit more discomfort. It reminds me of something I see often when I’m coaching people through bare throat arrow breaks.
If you’ve never come across one, it’s an empowerment technique where the point of an archery arrow is placed into the soft part of the throat while the other end is braced against a solid surface or held against a board by a trained instructor. I’m one of only a handful of Master Certifying Instructors for bare throat arrow breaks and glass walks in the UK, and when someone commits to the movement, they simply lean into it until the arrow snaps. One clean moment. Straight through. Done.
When they hesitate, the whole experience changes. The point presses in again and again. The longer someone holds themselves away from the movement, the more uncomfortable it becomes. Nothing about the arrow has changed. The hesitation creates the pain.
It’s the same with the small task you’ve been circling.
The more you hold yourself away from it, the heavier it feels. The moment you commit and move towards it, the pressure eases; the task was never huge, it simply stopped growing in the space you’d been giving the resistance.
If you want a gentle practice this weekend, think about the task you’ve been sidestepping and ask yourself one clear question:
What would happen if I stopped circling it and took one clean step forward?
Momentum rarely comes from tackling everything at once. It often comes from addressing the one thing you’ve been avoiding, simply because the avoiding has become the uncomfortable part.
