Have you been pushing the floor? If not, you might want to give it a go after this!

When I was talking to one of my awesome clients, they confided that no matter how much they needed to increase their business income, they couldn’t quite manage to put in the work to make it happen.

They’d work for a few hours, have some great conversations, start the ball rolling, and then get a ‘squirrel’ moment and lose momentum. From there, the working day went downhill.

When I’m listening to my clients, I’m not only paying attention to their words… I’m tuning into their energy, their mood, their vibe. Honestly, the unspoken words between the sentences are often far louder than the actual voice.

I carried on listening to how much they were struggling, how much they knew they needed to up their game, but no matter how great the need, they couldn’t quite bring themselves to pick up the phone, get online, or do whatever they believed they had to do to create better cashflow.

Eventually, I chipped in.

“You’re not doing it because you don’t want to, and the more you try to force yourself into action, the more you’ll resist.”

PUSHING THE FLOOR

When my client didn’t immediately answer, I hit them with a challenge…

“Later on, after our call, I want you to go and find a space on the floor, get down there and push with all your might. Your goal is to push a hole straight through the ground with your hands.

“After a while, you’ll probably start to tire and want to give up.

“Depending on how determined – or bloody minded – you’re feeling, you might take a break, then grit your teeth and get back to it.

“Eventually, though, you’ll get more and more disillusioned, realise how much this task is draining your resources and, probably, start to resent me for setting you a challenge that feels impossible.”

My client looked at me, waiting for an explanation…

“That’s what you’re doing by relentlessly berating yourself for not doing something you really don’t want to do.

“If you don’t want to do the cold calls, don’t do the cold calls. Find another way.

“It doesn’t matter how much you believe you NEED to do it; if you fundamentally don’t want to, it ain’t gonna happen. That cycle of trying to do something you have no real intention of doing is exhausting you – it’s tantamount to pushing the floor. What’s more, you will eventually come to resent the person setting you that task….”

“Me”, my client answered simply. I nodded. It was time to find a different driver. Need won’t cut it for everyone.

Here’s the thing… there are some excellent coaches and personal development ‘gurus’ talking about the power of increasing our levels of necessity.

I’ve even said it myself, many, many times.

When our need is greatest, for most of us, we’ll pull out all the stops to make it happen. If we can learn to energetically, emotionally, psychologically raise our levels of necessity without actually being up against a wall, we’ll create the kind of habits that will take us to new levels of success and prosperity.

BUT…

Raising necessity doesn’t work for everyone. And that’s okay.

If you’re reading this, you know yourself better than anyone else, so if doing what everyone else is telling you to do isn’t working, you might want to find another route.

For my client, it was far more about raising their levels of ENJOYMENT!

Focus on the elements of your work that you really love and do more of that. Either outsource the parts you don’t enjoy, or find a way to reframe and enjoy them.

That’s what my client and I are focusing on now. Sure, we’ve set some milestones to aim for but, in the meantime, we’ll be working on raising their enjoyment levels, so they’ll be less distracted by those squirrels, and they can stop pushing the floor.
