These days between Christmas and New Year have always felt like a pocket of suspended time to me. The world goes a bit hazy. Nobody quite knows what day it is. The usual pace dissolves and everything softens around the edges. I used to treat this as an inconvenience; a strange, sluggish blur I felt I needed to push through so I could be ready for January.
I don’t treat it that way anymore.
The more years I spend running my own business, the more I value this odd, quiet week. It’s one of the few moments in the calendar where the world places almost no demands on us. Most people are switched off. Most conversations can wait. Most expectations fall away. That creates a kind of breathing space you don’t get at any other time of year.
I’ve learned that this is when my mind starts to drift into places it doesn’t usually have access to. Ideas surface without pressure. Patterns become easier to see. I can look back over the year without bracing. I can look ahead without forcing anything into shape. The clarity arrives sideways rather than head-on.
There’s a softness to this week that feels medicinal when you let yourself settle into it. No hustling. No making grand plans. No proving anything. Just a gentle unwinding; a chance to stretch out mentally and emotionally after twelve months of holding everything together.
I often find myself pottering through the house, reading half a chapter of something before wandering off to make a cup of tea, pulling on boots for an aimless walk, or settling into a chair with absolutely no intention beyond being still for a while. These small, seemingly insignificant movements create more inner space than any productivity hack I’ve ever tried.
When I return to work in January, I can usually trace my clearest thinking back to this week. Not because I was planning, but because I wasn’t. I’d given myself enough quiet for the next season of ideas to make themselves known.
So if you’re in that soft, liminal stretch where the days blur into one another, let yourself drift a little. The in-between has its own wisdom. You don’t need to fight it.
