A few years ago now, I was on the exercise bike, mid-ride, doing nothing more ambitious than trying not to fall off, when an idea landed so fast and so complete it felt like it had been downloaded into me from somewhere else entirely.
I picked up my phone right there on the bike and posted on LinkedIn before I’d worked out a single detail. Six coaches. People who wanted to change something. That was more or less the whole pitch.
I was still on the bike when the replies started. Two people signed up before I’d even got off it. I worked the rest out afterwards – the structure, the pricing, what it would actually involve. None of it existed when I hit post.
I never looked back.
That was #ProjectArtemis. It’s been running ever since, and every coach who’s come through it started in more or less the same position I was in on that bike – no blueprint, no twelve-step plan, just a clear sense of what they were good at and no idea yet how to build a business around it.
I think that’s usually the real gap, if we’re honest. So many of the coaches I speak to are brilliant at the work and skint anyway, convinced something’s wrong with them, or the market, or the whole profession, when really it’s just the business that was never properly built around the talent.
There’s an entire industry set up to sell those same people a blueprint instead – a six-step plan, a twelve-point strategy, an eight-week programme that’ll supposedly turn you into a millionaire by Christmas. People hand over the credit card hoping it’ll finally work, and end up broke and despondent, wondering what’s wrong with them, when really it’s the guidance that let them down.
Something to sit with this week.
Where are you still waiting for someone else’s blueprint before you’ll trust your own experience enough to build with it? What would you do differently if you stopped waiting for permission and started now, half thought through, the way I did on that bike?
The rest, I promise, you work out afterwards.
If you know you’re supposed to be helping people in this world, but you’re struggling to cut it as a coach, or frustrated that your practice hasn’t got anywhere close to its potential yet – get in touch, and let’s see if #ProjectArtemis is a good fit for you. Yes, it is affordable.
