I’ve written before about creating that ‘hit list’ of people and businesses you’d really love to work with. 

My advice on this is really simple: keep a live list of five people, by name, that you’d love to have as clients, and work on building those relationships. 

At the very least, work on making sure they know who you are! 

If it’s businesses you’re after rather than individuals, you still need individual names AND to get on their radar for all the right reasons. Who are the decision-makers you need to be talking to at that big brand? How can you show up power-fully inside their ‘bubble’? How can you serve them and really make a difference? 

Assuming you’re already doing all that, there’s one step so many neglect to take… 

You need to let them know you’d love to have them as a client. 

What’s so scary about that? 

“Hey, you know that problem you were talking to me about? You know I can help with that, right? Why aren’t we working together yet? How do we make that happen?” 

“You know what? I keep this really short list of people I’d love to work with, and you’ve been right at the top for a while. I know I could make a positive difference for you, and I know we’d have a ball working together. Would you be up for exploring that?” 

So long as you’re sincere, and you’ve been putting in the effort to serve and build a relationship, it’s hard to go too far wrong with this approach. 

Don’t rush it. Don’t be one of those fools who connects on LinkedIn, asks what your greatest challenge is, and then smarms their way into report and junk. 

That’s just desperate and creepy! 

Be real. Be authentic. Work on creating just one client at a time, and remember, a ‘no’ doesn’t need to mean the end of a relationship… it might mean ‘not now’ or ‘no, but I know someone else you’d be perfect for’. 

Got it? 

Go make it happen. Don’t expect them to psychically know you want to work your magic with them… you need to let them know!
