IMAGINE one of those giant thermometers — you know, the ones they use for fundraising to give us all an indication of how close they are to their target amount.

Got it?

Awesome!

Now imagine you have your own, personal thermometer gauge, and this one is purely for measuring your potential.

This thermometer is huge and follows you everywhere. A subtle glance to your side and there it is, in all its glory.

How’s the temperature reading? Be honest with yourself. Are you really anywhere close to your potential?

If you’re being honest, the answer will begin with N and end with O. Just two letters. No need to labour the point.

If you’re being honest, the answer will begin with N and end with O. Just two letters. No need to labour the point.

The real question is this: What are you doing to make sure you fill that thermometer all the way up?

In fact, let’s make it even more fun; let’s turn your thermometer into one of those old-fashioned fairground strength tests, where you hit the button with the mallet and try to hit the bell at the top.

What can you do to make that bell ring, right at the top of your potential gauge?

Let’s start with some of the basics…

  1. Are you happy? If not, what can you do to create more happiness in your life?
  2. Are you doing the right work? Something that you love so much it doesn’t feel much like work at all? If not, what could you be doing instead?
  3. Assuming you’re running your own business, and it’s something you’re good at AND something that you absolutely adore, are you creating enough of an impact? Do enough people who need your services know about you? Do you have a big enough audience? Is it earning you enough money? If not, what can you to do positively impact that?

For the rest of this article, I’m going to be concentrating on point three. If you’re still working on points one and two, feel free to go off and work on those and come back here when you’re ready. It’s all good.

Are you showing up enough?

Okay, first off, what are you doing to spread your message? No, I don’t mean slapping sales and promo posts everywhere, I mean to educate people, serve people, help, inform, even entertain people?

Are you blogging? Podcasting? Using social media? Email marketing? Generating positive PR? How’s that potential thermometer looking?

Thanks to the advent of social media, we’re all publishers in our own right. We can build our own audience, use our personal brand, become an expert in our field, all at the touch of a button.

Remember, these days the world is our lobster. It used to be that we were relying on third-party endorsement through newspapers, magazines, TV and radio — these days, thanks to the advent of social media, we’re all publishers in our own right. We can build our own audience, use our personal brand, become an expert in our field, all at the touch of a button.

You’re doing all that, right?

Where’s your audience right now?

Who’s your audience? Where do they hang out? How can you get in front of them? How can you get to the point where you are seen as the go to person in your field?

If you’re using social media, how often? What kind of content? How much engagement are you getting from your audience? Check that thermometer again… how can you get that mercury further up the gauge?

Are you recycling your content and making it relevant for the different channels you’re using? You’re not just blasting it all out at the same time, through Hootsuite or something, are you?

You’re providing helpful, useful content for the people who might want to engage your services, right? People are actively wanting to follow your content, not hitting the ‘hide’ or ‘unfollow’ buttons?

?You’re providing helpful, useful content for the people who might want to engage your services, right? People are actively wanting to follow your content, not hitting the ‘hide’ or ‘unfollow’ buttons?

You’re not just posting once a day and then scarpering, are you? You’re taking the time to show interest, to engage with people, to serve? You’re talking to people outside of those who respond to your posts?

Read all about it

What about journos? Have you worked out a great story behind your business and looked at how you might be able to get some coverage for that? Have you found the reporters who are writing about topics related to your story? Have you looked them up on Twitter, just for starters?

Are you networking, online and off?

So many questions. I could keep throwing them at you all day, but I reckon you’ll get the picture by now.

If that potential thermometer (or bell-ringing strongman sideshow gimmick) isn’t close to full, you know there’s more for you to do.

You do know, don’t you?

YOU will know. Deep down, in the pit of your stomach, if you’re patting yourself on the back for a job half done, you’ll know.

If that’s you, get out there and do more.

Better still, get out there and work smarter. You don’t need to drill yourself into the ground, you just need to get clever with your marketing (and no, that does not mean outsourcing it — it’s YOUR voice people want to hear), get smarter with your schedule, maybe outsource more admin and get excited about building your reputation in all the right places.

Do enjoy it… if we have fun, it’ll feel so much easer to accomplish.

Until next time,
