Most people think their ideas are what make them memorable. In reality, it’s often their voice that does the heavy lifting. The warmth, the cadence, the little quirks that creep in when you stop trying to sound “professional”. The real you comes through when you speak out loud, and that’s when people start to feel like they know you.

I’ve noticed more and more that the business owners who build real connection – the kind that turns strangers into loyal audiences – are the ones who let people hear them. Not the polished, rehearsed version. The human one. The one who laughs at their own jokes, goes off on the occasional tangent, tells stories that don’t quite behave themselves, and speaks with lived experience rather than corporate scripting.

There’s a quality to voice that text alone can’t replicate. You can feel energy through a microphone. You can feel certainty and vulnerability and delight. You can feel the truth of someone’s message in a way that bypasses the filters we all apply to anything written. Your voice carries who you are. It reaches places a post can’t.

That’s one of the reasons I keep nudging people towards audio. Not because everyone needs a podcast – plenty don’t – but because speaking out loud makes you clearer, faster. You can hear your own alignment. You can tell when you’re trying too hard or hiding behind the comfortable version of yourself. You start to trust your own authority. And when that shifts, everything else follows.

If you’ve been hovering around the idea of using your voice more, consider this weekend an invitation to play with it. Nothing complicated. Record a short voice note to a client or colleague. Talk through a problem out loud before you write about it. Capture a quick story on your phone. See how it feels to express yourself without editing mid-flow.

You don’t need a fancy studio. You don’t need a perfect plan. You don’t need permission. What you do need is the willingness to let people hear you. When your audience can hear you, they’re far more likely to understand you. And when they understand you, trust grows quickly.

Your voice is one of the most underused assets in your business. Let it do some of the work.
